I had always loved action figures. Creating mini pieces of art that everyone can take home and articulate however they want. As a part of my minor, I designed and created an action figure within ZBrush along with designing a full lineup of characters and a packaging concept. I made the joint and points of articulation within ZBrush using real action figures as a reference.

I began with some silhouette explorations before nailing down exactly how I wanted my character to look. I played around with different proportions until I found one I liked. I then took this base and tried different clothing and hair. I typically design simple characters so I decided to challenge myself to design more complex characters.

My next step was taking the elements I liked from my exploration and drawing a turnaround of Azryth. I added some more complex details to her design, as well as elements that furthered her story. I designed her with articulation in mind, knowing where each piece would end and begin helped to make the final sculpt more aesthetically pleasing. Then, using my final character design, I drew a proposed articulation diagram. I wanted her to have interchangeable hands for holding her staff as well as interchangeable feet to further her character even more.

I've included the moodboard for my designs. I wanted her to exist within the 70s rather than be inspired by. I sourced images from paparazzi and magazine photos from the era as well as catalog and sewing pattern images.

The next step was creating the other characters that would exist alongside Azryth to create a full toy line. I wanted each character to be unique and tell a cohesive story. I named the line "The Devil's in the Details" and created a concept for the packaging design.

The next step was sculpting Azryth in ZBrush based on my turnaround. I sculpted her in full before breaking her up for articulation. I was a fun challenge creating each joint while still maintaining Azryth's overall look.

Finally, here is the texturing pass of the final action figure. Using her concept I textured the action figure to give an idea of the final product.
